This Camino is like an Irish Folk lore! So far we've had a 2 day battle with a 9 foot Syrian giant, discovery of a statue of the Virgin Mary which prompted the building of this monastery.
Looks like the Bastille. Apparently done by a king who raided money from the Moors. We had a lovely dinner down by the river in Najera. They do a special menu for us hungry peregrinos, 18 euro for 3 courses with drinks. I will post a picture. Lovely hotel, only 60 euro for us both with an excellent breakfast. We regretted a later start because we were walking through the vineyards with a temp of 30! Got our next stop, Santa Domingo at 1. Have now done 200 K and 320,000 steps according to John's calculations! Yet another amazing Cathedral with another slightly unbelievable story
The weather has broken this afternoon with thunder and lightning but hopefully cooler temps tomorrow. Oh the story, a mother, father and son were walking the Camino and stopped here. A local girl took a fancy to the boy but he spurned her advances. She got her revenge by planting booty in his bag and told the cops. The boy was hanged and the parents continued to Santiago and returned a month later. They were amazed to find him dangling but still alive. They hurried to the mayor to demand that he was cut down. The mayor was not impressed and was eating his roast chicken dinner. He said that if the boy was alive, then let his dinner come back to life. This it duly did and since then, chickens have been kept in the Cathedral!! Now doesn't that happen every day!!
